Default Descending isn't

For some reason my DESC specification in my request is having NO effect. Can anyone assist?
Set ArticleCategoryRset1 = Connect.Execute("SELECT * FROM MainContent WHERE NonBrowsable = 0 AND CatLevel2 = '" & CatList & "' ORDER BY Identifier DESC")
Incidentally it is an Access 2000 database
Also, am I correct in assuming that Ascending is the default ordering method?

Identifier may be a reserved word. Put sqaure brackets around it and see if that would make a difference.
