Once a user has logged in, using a database table of usernames etc, you may want to store either an ID or a unique reference to that user (username?) in a session object.

However, you can read/write/modify session elements when a page loads, so I would do this:

1) Check that the login is correct
2) Store the ID/Username in a session element
3) Redirect to a new page.

Hope that helps.

Craig.
Yes, session is the place to put it, consider placing only the userId in the session variable to reduce the amount of memory usage of the session. Placing large amounts of data i.e. objects/arrays in session vars is considered bad.
