Default Query is too complex error?

    Hi,

We’ve run into an error and are not sure what is causing it.

Currently we are running an Access database with 6 tables, the table in question is called “users”. This table has 40 fields. Everything was working fine until we added another field making the total fields 41 (we will need to add more in the future, possibly up to 70). Once we added the field we got the “query is too complex” error. Only some asp pages that call this table are getting errors, others continue to work fine. We think the pages that work only read from the table, where the pages that don’t work try to write to the table.

What we think is going on is our query is currently set to “select * from….”, when we changed that to select a specific field or fields it seems to work.

If this is the case our question is why and what are the limits? The second question would then be how do we select say the first 20 fields, or do we have to name each field in our query like “select field1, field2, field3 from….”?

The last question, we are going to be moving the database to SQL 7.0 in the near future. Will there be any problems with our current setup (number of fields per table)? Will there be a serious performance hit because of the large number of fields?

Thank you for your help.

Sounds like the db needs to be "Normalized".

Jerry
