I have data that I am displaying to the user using xml and xslt.
The data comes from a web page textarea. I want to be able to show the carriage returns when I display the page. I am having trouble determining what the actual character for the carriage is so that I can replace it with an html
.
I have tried
and no luck. in my xml the string-length fuction tells me there is something representing the carriage return. Also if I write this:

<xsl:value-of select="translate($String,'
','* ')/>

I will get a * where ever there is a carraige return. Note that
when the code was written above I type the string then the comma then the apostrophe then enter then the other apostophe.

I have use xsl:preserve-whitespace and If I look at my string in a text editor all my carraige returns are there. How can I retreive the value of this carriage return so that I can replace it with a
?
