Hi please find the discussion thread about the said topic...can anybody make any suggestions.... ?

Runtime generation of webpages
Bhalchandra - 16 May - 01:43:49 AM

I want to generate runtime webpages with HTML extension.A particular word from the URL will be picked up and which will be
matched with one of the field in the database and a webpage will be generated at runtime.e.g.
The user types http://www/microsoft.com/professional/bhalchandra.html .From this URL only "bhalchandra" will be picked up.
Next it will be matched with a table in the database with the field "loginid".Then it will pick up all the information in the rest of the fields and will display at runtime.
Any body.......out there with some solution ?p.s. Why I don't want to create the static html pages is simply because it will increase the load on my serer.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

You probably can do this
Vineet - 16 May - 01:52:37 AM

use " Request.serverVariables("url") " this will give you the url, then extract the "filename" from the url using "mid", "right","len" functions.
Then its simple querying the database with the extracted part ( after removing the extension, of course), once the record is found it is as simple as 1,2,3.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Runtime generation of webpage - RE: You probably c
Bhalchandra - 16 May - 04:56:45 AM

Hi
I did what you said.
Now the problem is if I type some other URL then also it picks up the earlier URL as the file ssaved with that name only.

Like....The code which I've written to display the information is in the file "drsubhash.asp". It picks up drsubhash ..matches the information....and displyas it on the page....

But if I type ../../vineet.asp then also it display drsubhas information as file is saved with that name....

hope I'm clear....

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Which file is saved and where?
Vineet - 16 May - 05:26:38 AM

How are you selecting the url or typing it. I dont think I fully understand what you are trying here. What I am thinking is like this :

I have a page say
c:inetpubwwwrootpage1.asp

Now on this page I have a button or something and when this page gets submitted then on the next page, "Process.asp" I am picking up the "URL" of the previous page, checking it against the database and then showing the values in a table. But the question is if I type
"c:inetpubwwwrootpage2.asp"
then this particular page will be executed, now I need to have a submit button on this page too and that submit will take "page2.asp" to "process.asp" and the same process repeats.

Now if you are directly typing the url in the address bar then of course you will need all those different pages and all the pages should end up going to "Process".asp"

OR

You can have a select from which the user will select the url and then the page is submitted.

Please explain what exactly you want.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Bhalchandra...

This is in conitnutaion with the last reply of your...

It is somethig like this.

I want the user to type the URL like
http://sitename/directoryname/username.html
(the file username.html exists no where....I want it to be generated it at runtime.)

Now after he types it and says enter then only "username" will be picked up from the URL and the value will passed "index.asp" to retrive all the information. Which in turn will be displayed on the page and the URL will remain the same.

Once again...the username.html file is not stored anywhere.

I did what you told me in the first reply and I'm able to generate the info but only for one user by whose name I'll save the "info retreving" file and not for the other users...

This is the thing I don't want to do as every time some manual work will be required to create the file.Hope

I made it clear.....

If you are located in Bomabay may be I can talk to you to sort it out...

-----------------------------------------------------------------

If you think about it
Vineet - 16 May - 12:16:10 PM

you might understand, if a user types a url that doesnt exist at all, you will always get the "Page Not Found" error, when there is no page to display, there is no way you can manipulate with url and query the database.

The only possible solution that I can think of is:

remove the username.html part, let the user go to
http://sitename/directoryname/index.asp

If you can store his user name in a session variable, then depending on that, show him his records.

Also post our links from yesterday here, may be someone else will be able to help.

Sorry.
I am in Chicago.
