Default Effective Paging in ASP

Can anyone please supply a link to a tutorial or a brief decription on how to return the results of a query in pages.

I have seen many using the 'recordset.PageSize and recorset.AbsolutePage' methods but they all get the whole recordset first, which on a database of 10's of thousands is to slow. Can you not just request certain sections of database depending on which page you are on.

Oh I'm using Access 97. Presumably it's simplier in SQLServer.

Hope I've explained this properly.

Steve.
