Default alternative to Active X?

    Hi

I have a website using an active X control (OCX) to determine how old a file is on the client machine and if it is older the the newest version on the server, the client automatically downloads the file. It also downloads other new versions of support files.

I would like to have netscape and IE cross browser compatibility.

Is there another way to do this? Is ASP robust enough? What other microsoft technologies could do this and work more or less seamlessly with Netscape also?

Could I not write a active X program that exists entirely on its own and resides as an automation server in IIS 4.0?

thanks

Chris
