Default Help! SQL Server Secututy

I'm sure this is me just missing the point but I'm totally confused on how to secure a database.

Basically I have a small ASP application that's pulling data from a SQL Server 2000 database. The app works fine but I know want to build some security into it.

All the samples of login systems that I've seen use a table of users created within the database but surely you should be able to use SQL servers built in security instead?

Can anyone let me know how they've secured their SQL Server apps. Like I say, I'm sure I'm missing something obvious here.

Thanks
