Default Problem with Date formats

I am checking a date range entered by the user against a date held on the database. All dates on both the user PC and server are setup to be in dd/mm/yy format however for the date range check to work the user must enter the date in mm/dd/yy format (which is not acceptable).

Why is this ?
Basically the user wants to enter dates in a dd/mm/yy format but when I use the entered dates in a WHERE statement it assumes that its been entered in a mm/dd/yy format. How can I make sure that the SQL statement will compare to a dd/mm/yy format ?
I hope this makes more sense.
thanks
