Default Request.ServerVariables("REMOTE_USER")

A PhoneBank ASP application was working perfectly yesterday until the Network Administrator changed security permissions. We no longer can get into the PhoneBank. Out first page, default.asp looks like this:

<%@ LANGUAGE=VBScript %>
<% Option Explicit %>
<% Response.Expires = 0 %>
<%
if Request.ServerVariables("REMOTE_USER") = "" Then
&#039if session("Logon") = "" Then
&#039 Response.Status = "401 Unauthorized"
Response.Redirect "failedlogin.htm"
Response.end
Else
Session("Logon") = Request.ServerVariables("REMOTE_USER")
Session("User") = Right(Session("Logon"),len(Session("Logon"))-InStr(Session("Logon"), "\"))
Response.Cookies("UserName") = Session("User")
Session("CurrSSN") = "-1"
Response.Cookies("CurrSSN") = Session("CurrSSN")
Response.Redirect "pbMain.asp"
Response.end
end if

%>

It worked perfectly. What could have changed to cause Request.ServerVariables("REMOTE_USER") to be null.

Thanks

Allowing anonymous connections would cause your problem. A user needs to authenticate with NT in order for REMOTE_USER to be known.

Michael Swanson, MCSE, MCP+Internet
Webmaster
Donnelly Corporation
mike.swanson@donnelly.com

Is Challenge response set on the server? If not you need to uncomment the response.status = "401 Unauthorized"

Also why are you using remote_user?
I have always used Logon_user or Auth_user. I thought remote_user returned an IP.

Force the response.status and look for logon_user (assuming you are using IE as a browser)
