    I would offer the advice of indexing the char mainly because of future text-based matching queries. I&#039m not sure if there is an extreme reason why not to do both, but for now I would say just the char.

    Yes, although you can create multiple indexes, of course, and SQL will choose which index to use. Also.... If you are using a primary key, MAKE SURE THE INDEX IS NON-CLUSTERED! :-) If you are having an index on a char field, though, and are going to be searching on that field, make it clustered.
