Default Which is faster? index by number or char?

I guess that really says it all. Should I use the user_name or create a numbered primary key to index on? or both? Just wondering if it does make a difference? User_name could be as long as 15 Char, but a numbered field would take a while to get that big. Any other tips to make things faster....SQL7.0?

Thanks for any input.
DRUG DEALER

would offer the advice of indexing the char mainly because of future text-based matching queries. I&#039m not sure if there is an extreme reason why not to do both, but for now I would say just the char.
