Default formatting database results

Hi, I am trying to get my results returned from a database to have a maximum length of about 250 characters, kind of like a preview... Is there any way to format the results so that only the first 250 characters are returned?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If string contains Null, Null is returned.
length : Numeric expression indicating how many characters to return. If 0, a zero-length string is returned. If greater than or equal to the number of characters in string, the entire string is returned.
