There is, by default, a small buffer on the top and left margins in most browsers. In IE you can adjust this margin with the TOPMARGIN and LEFTMARGIN properties in the BODY tag. For example:<BR><BR><HTML><BR><BODY LEFTMARGIN=0 TOPMARGIN=0><BR>Way up in the upper left!<BR></BODY><BR></HTML><BR><BR>Note that this will not work in Netscape 5 or lower (haven't tested it in the latest version, though)
To cover both browsers for alignment try this:<BR><BR><body leftmargin=0 topmargin=0 marginheight=0 marginwidth=0><BR><BR>Also, I couldn't tell from your question, but if the small amount of space is on the right side and the table is with in a frame, the browser may be reserving space for the scroll bar. You can fix that by changing the scrolling value for your frame.
