Default Cookies and 'dangerous' characters

I&#039m working on a log-in component than can store a person&#039s login in a cookie on his/her computer. To make sure that it cannot be tempered with i&#039ve encrypted the login. This is where the problem arises: certain characters are not accepted by the cookie. The login is stored, but it is corrupted. The encryption (RC4 and Vernam) generates characters that are treated as special characters in cookies (such as the block-symbol).

Is there anyone here who knows how to get around this? I would rather not use another encoding. Instead, i would like to know the character-codes for the problem-causing characters.
