Default Security flaw in User Login

I have recently implemented a system for my forum where by you have to login to post stuff on it. You have to register your nickname and password to do this (this was to stop the "impersonation" of names). Unfortunatly it has not solved the problem, as someone can register the same UserName but with a space on the end (so using _ as a space, my name would be Slowbob_ although it would just appear as Slowbob).

Is there any code I can get that will strip spaces from before AND after the name when they are registering?

Thanks.
