Default persistent label on postback

I've been working a page which has a rather complex form on it, and I have some labels which I want to change depending upon the states of some form elements. This is rather simple, and handled with javascript. However, the labels do not maintain their Text property on a page postback, since they aren't form elements.

One difficulty here is that the number of these labels (and many other things on the form) change since they are created dynamically. However, ones that reappear do keep their ids (all of my other form elements work perfectly).

Is there any way to create a label or new control type which has a text property that stays across postbacks?
