Default Syntax for Include statement

    Just purchased Sam's Teach Yourself Active Server Pages 3.0. Page 518 states that you should copy to the root of your web directory and insert
<!--#include virtual="/"-->
in your page(s).

This book pointed me to this website where I've notice example code shows:
<!--#include file = ""-->

The book continues to use the same syntax as mentioned above yet, when I try using that, I get an error message indicating / could not be found. If I remove the "/" and change "virtual" to "file", everything works. I've copied everywhere except on my forehead, only to get the same results each time.

Can anyone explain?

    Default RE: Syntax for Include statement

give that a good read, pay close attention to this section

"To include a file, the syntax is like an HTML comment. You need the <!--, followed by a #include. You can then use one or two keywords, either file or virtual"
