Default Stop people entering HTML tags?

I have a web site with a back-end where people login and add/modify their own details.

These details are then displayed in a standard search/retrieve system on the site.

I've just noticed that if someone were to include some HTML tags in one of their fields, it could seriously mess up the display on my pages. For example, if they stuck in </td></tr> it would close my cell row, and really bugger it up. I don't mind them putting in some html, like links etc, but if they make a mistake it can really make my site like bad to users.

Has anyone come across this? Are there any standard ways of checking for it in the error checking of my modify pages?

Any suggestions would be gratefully received.
