Default Browser Protocols

When you want to stream a windows media player file you would request the file with the following protocol.. 'mms://'. With Real Player files its 'rtsp://'.

How does the browser know how to use these protocols?

    They do it with mirrors.

Or

They look at the mms://, rtsp:// bit and realise that it is not a http:// kind of page. I know that that is how I would do it.

    Default It's either a plug-in or already...

...coded into the browser itself. When you install RealPlayer, it installs a little plug-in which IE can use to accept the rtsp:// stream and then decode it - or something like that anyway.

Oliver.
