On an IIS application, it's easy to have a pool of memory-resident variables that are global to the whole application. All I have to do is stick whatever I want in Global.asax and it's available everywhere I need it.

Among other things, I store the database connection string as an application variable. This way the correct database gets hit whenever code is migrated from test to production.

But now, I have to build some EXE components that need to access the same database as the ASPX pages.

For obvious reasons, I cannot hard-code the connection string into the binaries. It must be an external reference of some sort.

I was thinking of having the binaries read a connection string from a text file, but when I think about how many extra cycles this will burn it leads me to look for alternatives.

So, to put it simply:

Does anyone know of a way to get the equivalent of an Application Variable that would be accessible to a precompiled binary EXE?

Thanks.
