Default using session variables

I recently read the article here at 4guys on session variables and how evil they are. I use 2 sessions on my site: one for storage of an id# and one for storing cart info- would I be better off using a cookie for the cart info rather than a session variable?

I could just write the cart info to the dbase every time a new product is added, although it would result in a more cluttered dbase- would this be a better use of resources than using a session or cookie? Thank you for any input.

    Session variables are not evil.

As long as all you're doing is sticking in a couple of strings (not vast swathes of information and/or objects), then you're fine.

Craig.
