Default sessions across SSL

can a session stay active if the user crosses into an https: section of our website?

I use global variable pages that build the entire content and navigation of each page, along with options that are set by wether the user has an active session name or not like the top bar of the website will say "login &#124 join" or "my shoppingcart &#124 my options". When they log in the session is started, but if they navigate into a secure section of the site it seems as if the session is lost (ie. login options appear again) - can I do this? or should I keep everything under ssl?

Thanks!

in effect, HTTPS is a different server altogether from HTTP, so no, you can't share sessions.
