Default Trimming a DB field

I'm trying to search a database that has a character field set to 4 characters. However not all the records are necessarily 4 character long. Thus they get padded on the left.

Does anyone know if there is an SQL statement that can be used to Trim the end of a field? None of the book I have seem to touch on it, and if they do, I don't know what to look up. Or is there perhaps a better solution?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
bch
