is there a way to view all the tables in a database using a sql call?
select TABLE_NAME from INFORMATION_SCHEMA.tables where TABLE_CATALOG = 'your db name'
select name from sysobjects where type = 'U' order by name , <databasename>

or

sp_table s @type='table'

You shouldn't directly query the systables direct, if the same information can be found with the INFORMATION_SCHEMA views.

Using the views ensures compatibility with future versions.
I bow to your superior knowledge
but why not > 'You shouldn't directly query the systables direct'
the systables are up for change without notice.

So in SQL2006 the systables might be changed (so your program fails) but the views are still the same.
