I have some sql 7 tables that are millions of rows, and most of the data isn't used anymore, however I need to keep the data and can not just delete it.

What is the prefered way to archive sql information?

How do you determine what 'old data' is? SQL does not automatically label a record as old or last used. You need to have somthing like a DTS (DateTimeSTamp) field which you can create using getdate().

Based on some business rules (whether the record is old), you can move the records to an archive table, backup the database and remove the archive table (if that's what you prefer, you could also just leave the archive table and add you new records to it periodically).

You need to think about the rules first.
