Default Re-Ordering Records in a DB

I have let's say 10 records in a database and I would like the user to have control of the order in which they are displayed. Can anyone tell me the best way to go about this?

Should I create another field called sort_id and have the users update that field? Is it possible to update all the records at once? Has anyone done anything like this before? If anyone has used Netflix, I want to do something like the Queue they do.

Thanks.

    Default Yes, add a field...

...and yes, you can update all records at once, so long as you update expression *applies* to all records.

Which it probably can't do in the general reordering case.

So you will probably end up doing UPDATE on one record at a time.
