Default Problem with a form

I have created a booking form, update form and cancel form. I am wanting for the cancel form NOT to delete the record from the database but just record the fact it has been cancelled (For Auditing purposes). I set that up easily enough, however I want to disable the submit button and have a message appear if anyone tries to cancel or update this record once it has been updated for the first time, any suggestions???
If Not RS.Fields("Cancel") Then
Response.Write "<input type='submit'>"
Else
Response.Write "Record Cancelled."
End IF

    Default How is this advanced???

When you read the info about this record, you read the "cancelled flag" and, if it is set, you disable the submit.

??? Did I miss something obscure you aren't telling us?
