For pure, "under-the-covers", .NET framework specific stuff:

Applied Microsoft .NET Framework Programming
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0735614229/forestlakewebser/

For pure ASP.NET books, I'd read - in this order:

SAMS Teach Yourself ASP.NET in 21 Days
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0672321688/forestlakewebser/
then

Microsoft ASP.NET Step ByStep
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0735612870/forestlakewebser/

then

Building Web Solutions with ASP .NET and ADO .NET
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0735615780/forestlakewebser/

finally

OOP with Microsoft Visual Basic .NET and Microsoft Visual C# .NET Step by Step
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0735615683/forestlakewebser/

The SAMS book is an excellent top-down book that provides a broad overview of all ASP.NET areas. The Step By Step book covers most of the same ground as the SAMS book, but I found it to be much more detailed in many areas, and it has some excellent reference sections about the Page class and Configuration files.

Finally, the ASP.NET & ADO.NET book was written by Dino Esposito who writes the ADO.NET column for MSDN. That book is a veritable cookbook of wonderful recipes for using DataGrid and other databinding controls with ADO.NET and ASP.NET. If you implement some of the solutions that he shows off in that book you will really WOW your workmates!
