Is it possible to request a website and save the contents of that page to a string?

Let's say for example that I want to store the word of the day from http://dictionary.reference.com/wordoftheday/ to a database. I would like to be able to write some code that would query that address and do one of two things.

1. Store the entire contents of the page to a string so that I can do a search within it for "word of the day" and extract the word.

2. Do the search through the page and save just a few sentences from it without having to store the whole page first.

Another potential use for the code would be if I wanted to keep track of previous weather temperatures. I could save the output of www.weather.com for my zip code and save the temp to a database. Then I would tell the code to do this automatically everyday and I could look at the database whenever I'd like and see the previous temperatures.

If you need clarification on what I'm trying to do, just email me at mailto:email@example.com.

Thanks In Advance!
