Default tracking a logged in user

I am fairly new to ASP stuff; sorry if my terminology is a little funky :)

I need to be able to track a user that has logged into my ASP website and store his username information when he adds information to the database. I am using a form based menus. Of course I know how to pass variable from one page to the next through the query string feature, but I do not know how to pass the a variable with a form input without using the submit feature. I tried the passing using onclick but I either have the syntax incorrect or that will not work.

What is the simplest way to give the user 3 different option (menu buttons) to choose and pass his username information with him in a variable as he moves around the website.

Thanks

Javan
