Default Session State

I am thinking about using the session cookie to track users in an intranet site, but I am confused where I want to create the cookie. Should it be created in the Web.config file when the user logs in? As well, since I am on the subject, I am using ADO.NET for my login database and when I am access my database and retrieve a correct value, I then want to send the user to the next page...well, I am using FormsAuthentication.RedirectFromLoginPage, which takes me the default.aspx page. how do I change this... as well, I do not want to creat a persistant cookie, so should I be using a different method?

Any help would be appreciated!

thanks,

J
