I am trying to compare a number to a (Autonumber(Access DB)) to a itself and it fails any reason why?

Here is a little detail:
I have a page that pulls from a Access DB a number that in Access is reffered to as a AutoNumber. and then I pass that number to the next page and run a Select statement that compares the number that was just sent through the Querystring to itself in the DB but it fails why? If I do the same as above but, change the number it compares to, to a physcal number it runs fine, but I need it to reference the number in the DB. help.

Here is a snip of the code:
Page One:
href=support.asp?ref=<% response.write SXNav("titleid") %>
this bit of code pulls from the DB the value of the field "titleid"

Next Page:
pageid = Request.querystring("ref")
this bit of code takes the value passed by the ref querystring and assigns it to a variable called "pageid"

SXP = "select * from content where titleid = pageid"
set SXStuff = conn.execute(SXP)
this bit of code tries to select all the data from the DB table called content and compare it to pageid which is the variable that I just created.

BUT IT FAILS ?????
