Creating a Virtual Directory under the root directory will allow you to use that directory as the root for the application it houses. Assume you have wwwroot directory, and want to put 2 applications under it. So you put 2 directories under the root, dir1 and dir2. If they're not virtual directories, the root for those applications will still be wwwroot, so the global.asa file that you might use will have to go in there. If they are Virtual Directories, then the root folder for the applications become dir1 and dir2, respectively. Get it?
