Default Login Status

I've seen a few variations of this question, but I'd like to ask opinions on monitoring user logins to a web site.

For example, if a user Bob logs on to the system, it's easy to validate the user's password and keep him logged on with session variables. But, if another user Susan logs on, what is a good way to set-up a system such that an administrator can know that Bob and Susan are logged on. And, how could one design the system such that the administrator would know that Bob was logged out if he explicitly logged out and that Susan was logged out after a timeout?

Thanks,
Phatty

Why not just write it all to a table or a log file?
