are you doing this onsubmit() on the client side?

should use java script OR better do it on the server

so just

strClean=trim(request.form("yourtextArea") ) ...

http://www.access2asp.com

I am submitting th form and checking in the same way as u mentioned ie... strClean=trim(request.form("yourtextArea"))
but problem is when enter key is pressed and then a string is entered in the textarea..the above trim function is not working...

any help??
.. spaces at the beginning and ending of the string.

You have to, instead write your own function to do this. Or, because I'm a **** swell guy (and want more freelance work), I have a knowledge base snippet that'll do what you need:
http://www.27seconds.com/kb/article_view.asp?id=18
