Default Using SQLDataReader

What reason would I have to use a SQLDatareader over using ADODB.Connection.Execute and recordsets to retrieve a single value from a table? I'm attempting to read the value from a table like below when I already have the name.

columnID columnName

1 myname

Using ADO, this is easy, create the connection and set the execute to a recordet. Using A SQLDatareader, I would assume this is easy but I can't get it to work. Should I just use ADO instead? (I'm under the impression that in .NET using the new objects is preferable). Any advice?

Thanks!
