Default Slow and RecordCount

I'm reading a fairly large table (25000 records) to get a count and display it on the home page. It's taking 5-8 seconds, which is too long for a home page. I'm using RECORDSET.RECORDCOUNT (,3,3,1) but still takes a long time. The question is: Is there a way to speed this up? May be ASP.NET? How about running after the home page is displayed, and then run the process and pluging in the results? HELP! Thanks.

    use..
select count(*) from tablename.

Right now, you're reading every record into the the recordset...not necessary if you're just looking for the count
