Default Access Database empty fields

I have an update form that users can complete. The form consists of a series of textfields that the user fills in and the information is inserted into my database. I want the user to be able to keep some fields empty if they wish. At present if the fields are left blank I get an error meesage saying that the fields cannot contain an empty string. Any information on how I can deal with this would be greatly appreciated.

I really don't know what everyone else does, but I have found that if I run a function that replaces the "" with something unique like "*n/a*" and run the reverse of that function when reading the data I get the job done.
I am curious to see if there is a better way, but hopefully this will help.
