Default Where to begin

This may have been asked a hundred times before, but where should the classic ASP developer start with .NET. Presumably we need to get the operating software etc from MS. Can anyone recommend a good book. I am looking at Worx's Professional ASP.NET but at nearly £50 (Sterling!!) it's a big price to get the wrong book.

How steep is the learning curve? I've done a bit of OO stuff, and my SQL programming is pretty good. Is it possible to stick with VB?

Thanks.

Chill, let me highly recommend Sams Teach Yourself ASP.NET in 21 Days. I did not write it, but served as consulting editor for the project. It's a very good book for those coming from a classic ASP background who need to get up to speed with ASP.NET.

You can read a sample chapter at:
http://www.4guysfromrolla.com/webtech/chapters/TYASPNET21/

and you can pick up a copy at:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0672321688/4guysfromrollaco

(Priced at 23 sterling)

Also check out http://aspnet.4GuysFromRolla.com

I also taught a class on beginning ASP.NET. You can check out the course Web site (there are PowerPoint slides and code examples) at:
http://www21.brinkster.com/ucsdteaching/

(although the site appears to be down right now)
