I have a website where people can upload images. Those images go into a folder called c:/website/images. Then I store the name of the image in the database, so when people request a image I first check if it exists in the database before I go checking the folder.

Right now there are about 4000 images in this folder, and growing fast every day. I'm worried about the number of images in a folder(not about disk space), what happens when they are 10.000 or 50.000 or even 100.000, does Windows handle so many files in one folder? Isn't this gona slow the system alot down? And the final question, what to do to make this as fast as possible?
