Default Textbox may not be left blank, Must fill field in Database.

I have a textbox that will be validated on the client side using JScript. Need to be sure the textbox is not blank or filled with just space. In VBScript all I would need to do is say
if trim(thisForm.Text1.value) = "" then msgbox "must be filled".
How can I trim the blanks on a textbox in JScript to make sure it is not empty. Is there any function that does this in JScript. Could not find anything. It is important that this is done on the Client Side. Thanks in advance
You can see two functions in client-side JavaScript to determine if a field is either empty or contains just whitespace. See:

http://www.4guysfromrolla.com/webtech/091998-1.shtml

Happy Programming!
