I mean for example:

In november you ask a question on a search engine..

Later that month you clear history & delete all cookies.

In december you go back to search engine - and all previous questions still appear in drop down.

How??
(Somebody out there knows).

But let's not forget the Broswer Elf who collects all this info and stores it in his pocket. What he does with this data is a mystery to all.

Some say he sells the information to large credit card companies in return for Yoohoo.
This reminds me of something I've been trying to understand. I first went to dictionary.com about 6 months ago. I went to it 3 months ago and it had the same search word in the search box that I used the first time I went to the site. I deleted cookies, closed the browser, changed my IE settings to disable persistant cookies. I went back and it still had the same word in the search box. I read this thread and went back. Same stupid word sitting there. I again cleared cookies, checked settings, cleared and disable the auto-complete feature, closed my browser and went back. Still there! How annoying. The only thing I can think of is if they've logged my IP address somewhere and stored the word there, but for six months?. Any thoughts?
